Until 1851, Merchantville was mainly farmland. Because of rumors of a coming railroad, Merchantville began attracting more people and the area began to become a bit more organized. The town of Merchantville was first a part of Stockton Township, but then the citizens of Merchantville petitioned the state of New Jersey to become an incorporated Borough. Merchantville officially became incorporated May 18th, 1974.
Merchantville experienced another boom during the automobile age when studies for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge started in 1914. After World War I many plots of land were bought because people saw the attractiveness of the area. When the bridge finally did open in 1926, new homes began being built and Merchantville swelled almost to its current population. New roads and businesses also sprang up around this time as people from all walks of life considered Merchantville to be the perfect place to put down roots. Merchantville was considered to be beautiful and pure because the well-known Maple Avenue is on a ridge that is 80 feet high where people thought the air was the most clean and pure.
Then and now, the people of Merchantville are known to be very hospitable to people who come to stay and those that are just passing through. The town is well established, well governed, and everything you could possibly need is conveniently located nearby making Merchantville the ideal home of many, many people. Well-known local author Francis F. Eastlack said of Merchantville in 1889, "Here you have an already established town, healthy, pure air, well lighted, well governed with every convenience befitting s wide awake, prosperous town, and where the people are hospitable and will gladly welcome all who seriously think of locating with them."
