The Tomlinson name dominated the early history of Laurel Springs. Four generations of the Tomlinson family purchased land, developed farms, and constructed local businesses in the area which included a grist and sawmill. In 1844 the great grandson, Ephraim Tomlinson, was the owner of three farms that formed the boundaries of Laurel Springs. He constructed his home and a small community which consisted of homes for his workers, as well as a school house. Do to the dense Laurel in the area he named it Laurel Mills. It didn't take long before the area, including the lake behind the mill damn, became commonly known as Laurel Mills, and that was the foundation of what is now known as Laurel Springs today.
It was the building of the railroad that encouraged migration to the community and real estate development. The railroad ran from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, with a stop in Laurel. A feature that attracted many tourists and vacationers was the Crystal Spring as well as the mile long lake. One of the most famous summer vacationers was Walt Whitman, whose writings inspired numerous visitors to come to visit the area. He claimed the Spring had medicinal qualities and helped to return him to health after a partial stroke. With the publicity came the real estate brokers and developers. Laurel Springs Realty and Laurel Springs Land Co. purchased farms in the area and began marketing the sale of lots and new construction.
