Gloucester Township can trace its roots back to James Whitall who built the oldest known house here in 1688. Later on, the town was meant to be a defensive bulwark against nearby indians, but as it was seen that the indians were friendly, the area came into disuse and was dubbed the 'Lost City of Upton'(Upton being the original name given.) and did not again gain great use until the mid 1700s when the Gabreil Daveis Tavern House was built and served as a waystation for boatmen who transported their wares to Philadelphia on Big Timber Creek. The inn has been restored and now stands as the historical centerpiece to the town and is a reminder of the deep history of the town and surrounding areas. It is also one of the oldest Townships in New Jersey, being one of the original 104 Townships incorporated by the New Jersey State Legislature on February 21, 1798.
Located in Camden County, the Township is close to both Philadelphia and Atlantic city and makes for a great commuter town for any interested in a more rural feel to their living space and more breathing room for their home. With a population of 65,000, it is still small enough to keep its 'small town' feel, while supplying a lot of the amenities of a larger city, including multiple schools and a completely autonomous infrastructure.
