Collingswood is a borough located in Camden County, New Jersey. Collingswood has been recognized as a borough since the New Jersey legislature passed an act in May 22, 1888. To create Collingswood pieces of Haddon Township were taken, and this was based on a referendum that was also held on May 22, 1888. Many in the area know Collingswood because of the fact that they have not issued any alcohol licenses since 1873. The area is often referred to as “dry” because stores and restaurants do not sell or serve any alcoholic beverages inside of the borough limits. According to the 2000 Census Collingswood has a population of 14,326, making it one of the larger boroughs in Camden County.
The history of Collingswood dates back to the 17th Century. The area was known as Newton Colony then and eventually became Newton Township. The Collings family owned a farm in what is now Collingswood for the majority of the 18th and 19th Centuries, hence the name. The house that sat on the property was known as the Collings-Knight house and actually still stands today. Interestingly, the same year that Collingwood separated from Haddon Township, a wealthy man by the name of Edward Collings, who was a relative of the Collings family, donated the land that would become Knight Park. Today Collingswood is known for its interesting history as well as many historic homes that still stand today, one of which is the oldest home in the county.
