Barrington New Jersey was first settled in 1703 by William Clark who purchased around 300 acres of land for farming purposes, and for almost 250 years the land stayed under the Clark name until it was broken up after World War II in order to create several smaller operating farms just on the outskirts of what was now a bustling part of the Centre Township. Rich in history, some of the earliest toll roads or 'turnpikes' went through this area and were controlled by the local government of Barrington, which gave them a bit of power over the early commerce in the region, and turned them into a prominent township while the area was still in its early years.
Located in Camden County, the small town of 7,000 has managed to stay deeply rooted in its rural roots, and many of the early farms that were created are still operational to this day, giving Barrington a more rural feel than other boroughs in the same region, and lending to the peaceful nature of this venerated community.
Barrington, like many of the other small boroughs in this area, has its own school district which serves grades K-8, but for grades 9-12 the students attend Haddon Heights High School which is located right next door. Also, Barrington has its own local governing body, and is part of the New Jersey State 5th Legislative District.
Although already an old community by then, Barrington was not recognized by the New Jersey State Legislature as a borough until 1917, and since that time it has fallen even more into its niche of tucked away community that is known as a quiet, and peaceful town. Also, with a great location, the commutes from Barrington to many of the nearby metropolitan areas is a breeze, making this an ideal place to live for a potential homeowner looking for a place to get away from the day to day grind of the city.
