Settled by the Roberts family in 1682, Maple Shade was primarily agricultural. For the first 100 years travel to the area was almost impossible as only the Kings Highway served Maple Shade; most residents chose to travel by boat rather than other means of travel. Finally, in 1794 Main Street was constructed to connect Kings Highway to the Cooper River ferry. After Main Street was constructed and travel became a bit easier, new settlers and familys began settling in the area because of its promising plantations.
The area attracted more settlers when and became more established in 1811 when property was purchased by Joseph Burrough for the construction of a schoolhouse. The school is now known as the Little Red Schoolhouse and is located on Main Street. The one room schoolhouse served the town for almost 100 years when it finally closed its doors in 1909.
As was common during this period of establishment all over the country, the coming railroad brought more of an identity to the area. The area was given a station and a rail stop; this gave the community the ability to welcome families that traveled by rail to employment outside of the area. Obviously, this brought many people to the area that wanted to live outside of the area where they worked. The railroad also brought other industries to the area such as butchering and meat processing. Industry was important in the area, as it´s what continued to bring money and settlers to the area.
Up until this time the area was known as Chester Township and was basically a neighborhood of Moorestown Township. In 1922 the Chester Township residents voted to be separated from Moorestown and elected a Township Committee. In 1945 the community chose to become Maple Shade Township.
