It is said that Mansfield got it's name from the English town on the border of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. It is believed to be fact because the township on the opposite side of Crosswicks Creek was once called Nottingham.
Mansfield was formed as a township in 1688. It was then reformed by royal charter in 1770. In 1798 it was incorporated by the State of New Jersey. In 1850 part was given to form Fieldsboro within the township. In 1852 part was ceded to help form Bordentown Township and in 1872 part to form Florence Township.
The area now known as Columbus, an unincoporated community within Mansfield, was named after Christopher Columbus. The area was settled by an English Quaker named Thomas Scattergood who had purchased 167 acres on Craft's Creek. It is said that the name of the community was originally Black Horse Village. The name was changed to Columbus in 1827 when the first post office was established.
