How the township was originally named is still in question. Some have said that Evesham Township was named after Evesham, England by the first settlers, who were Welsh and English Quakers, in the mid 17th century. It is also said that the township was named after Thomas Eves, one of the first settlers who purchased land in 1676, who came from Evesham, England.
Evesham Township orginally occupied all the land throughout the towns currently known as Medford, Washington Twp, Hainesport, Lumberton, Shamong, and Mount Laurel Townships. It was incorporated in 1692 as on of the 13 townships in the county. As time passed and popluation grew, the land was divided and each of the afore mentioned townships established. In 1872, the last township divided, and the area known as Evesham Township was established as what we know today.
The name Marlton is interchangeable with Evesham. Marlton came to be in the early nineteenth century. The discovery of Marl in the area, which was a fertilizer consisting of a mixture of green clay and shell fragments, led to the commerce and building boom in the 1830's and 40's. The village was named Marlton in 1845, and the post office and the baptist church both changed their names from Evesham to Marlton. The village now known as Olde Marlton, is preserved mostly intact, and falls under the protection of the historical guidelines of the township.
