Chesterfield offers a charming mix of historic villages, surrounded by rural farmland with scattered mix communities that were new construction over the years. The historic villages of Chesterfield, Crosswicks and Sykesville offer charming rowhomes and single family houses. Throughout the countryside you can find farms and land for sale, as well as communities offering more modern town houses or single family homes.
Chesterfield Township is located in Northern New Jersey in Burlington County. The township is quaint with just under 6,000 at the time of the 2000 census. The township has been in existence for hundreds of years, making this the mature township that many people love to call home. The township was first founded on November 6, 1688, and was reformed by Royal Charter on January 10, 1713. Later, the township would be incorporated as one of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey legislature. In the 1700s and 1800s portions of the township were taken to create new townships, such as New Hanover Township and Bordentown borough.
Dating back to the 1600s, Chesterfield Township is known to have been founded by a group of Quakers. The group of Quakers settled in Crosswicks, which is one of three communities that make up the township today. The other two communities that compromise Chesterfield Township are Chesterfield, and Sykesville. The three communities are often referred to as villages, with Crosswicks being the oldest.
Chesterfield Township borders several other townships and areas such as Bordentown Township, Mansfield Township, Springfield Township, and North Hanover Township. When you put all of these communities together you get the best of small town life with the modern day conveniences that we all rely on. Today there are many people from all walks of life living in Chesterfield Township, making it a great place for people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles. Dating back to the early 1700s there is no doubt that this community is steeped in colorful history.
