Burlington Township has an interesting history that started in the early 1600s. It´s said that three Dutchmen were the first settlers in the area and settled on the neck of land between the Assiscunk Creek and the Delaware River which is opposite of the Matinconk Island. In 1676 the English came and took the land and continued to settle in the area. The area continued to draw in European settlers from that time forward, making it one of the oldest settlements in New Jersey. Though the Europeans were the first to put down permanent roots in the area, Native American´s also seemed to be very prevalent in the area, specifically the Lenni Lenape tribes before and around the time that the three Dutchmen first settled in the area. Many tales exist of the first settlers and their interactions with Native Americans that may have inhabited the area in and around what would become Burlington Township.
The Swedish and the Finnish were most common in the area as they came to the area to start new lives. The Quakers were also common in the area and came with their companies and bought large plots of land. Most of the people that came to the area were ready for a more liberal government, which was far away and much different from their former lives. The Quakers actually seemed to settle most heavily in the area as the land offered a seemingly unlimited amount of land, wildlife, and sources of water.
Today Burlington Township continues to be a welcoming environment to a diverse population. Many of the same families that first settled in the area still have descendants living in Burlington Township. Many may say that Burlington Township doesn't have a very glamorous history, but the residents of the area are still quite proud, as they should be!
