Burlington City, New Jersey was the first as well as the original township in Burlington County. Native Americans, specifically the Lenni Lenape knew of Burlington Island as the oldest planted land, which is an interesting piece of Burlington history. The Europeans were the people who originally erected defined settlements and turned the area into what it is today. The detailed history of Burlington City is quite long and complicated, but we´ll offer you a shortened version here.
There is much evidence that Swedish settlers began living in the area in the early 1600s though the first recorded history was around 1624. There is also quite a bit of evidence that the Finnish and Dutch occupied the land for some time taking advantage of the wildlife in the area. King George II is the one who ultimately chartered the area before Burlington City became separate from the rest of the area. In 1784 the City of Burlington finally acquired its own Charter making it distinct.
The city has done well politically over the last 325 years and was once the Capital of West Jersey as well as holding the third largest port in North America. Burlington City also is the site of the first recorded European settlement as well as the states oldest Library. Burlington City also has New Jersey´s oldest Fire Company and the first pharmacy in the state. Burlington New Jersey is known for the Underground Railroad as well as the state´s first newspaper, which are huge pieces of history in and of themselves. Burlington City also has the County´s oldest residence, meaning that it still holds a physical reminder of where the area truly got its roots. The City of Burlington holds a lot of firsts for the state, which just goes to show how truly magnificent the area really is.
