Bordentown is another city rich in history and culture which dates back to the early days of the state of New Jersey. First incorporated as a borough by the New Jersey State Legislature in 1825 and later given the designation of a city in 1867, not only is the area historically significant, but located in Burlington County on the Delaware river it has been a hub of trade and commerce going back to the earliest days of American history.
First settled in 1682 by the Quaker Thomas Farnsworth, Bordentown quickly grew into the center of trade in the region(Then it was known as Farnsworth Landing) until just before the Revolutionary War when residents such as Thomas Paine and Francis Hopkinson brought the eye and ire of the British down upon it. First occupied by the Hessians in 1776 it was burned to the ground by the British in 1778, but being in such an excellent location is was not long out of service. Buildings went back up and the city once again thrived as a cultural center even attracting residents like Joseph Bonaparte who lived out his exile after his brother, Napoleon, was deposed.
All in all Bordentown is one of the most historically rich small cities in New Jersey, but that is not its only draw. With easy access to New York, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, and even D.C., Bordentown is also an excellent place to live outside of the big city without making it too difficult to commute. Big city access, small town appeal.
