I haven't posted in this category in quite awhile but this story certainly belongs there...

A woman in Toronto, Canada fell victim to identity theft and mortgage fraud and had her house stolen from her last year.  By forging her signature, the identity thief was able to transfer the title into the name of an accomplice and discharge her mortgage.  They then took out a new loan of $300,000 and defaulted.  The Toronto woman was then faced with a situation of either paying the mortgage or being evicted from her own home. After almost a year of court battles, she was able to reclaim her home and get the fraudulent mortgage dismissed.  The Consumer Council of Canada advises everyone to protect their identity and says title insurance is one of the best ways to protect yourself.  Read the full story
