Voorhees became a separate township in 1899 when the residents of the Waterford Township petitioned the State Legislature to make Voohrees a separate Township. Voorhees was named in honor of the then Govenor Foster McGowan Voorhees as he was the one who granted the request for Voorhees to become a separate township. The people of Voorhees were delighted to be considered their own township. While all the residents were proud of Voorhees, most of the residents remained loyal to their individual neighborhoods or sections of Voorhees.
By the end of its first year, Voorhees had just 969 residents that occupied 202 homes. Those that lived in the area according to the census of 1900 mainly worked on farms or farm related jobs. There were 390 wage earners in Voorhees and 171 of them worked on farms, 108 of them worked at the Lucas Paint Factory, and the remaining 111 held other miscellaneous jobs such as jobs with the railroad, grocers, dressmakers, and house painters. Voorhees reamined a nice country town for quite some time with the residents enjoying bearby lakes, hills, and nearby towns. Horses and cattle grazed freely, and apple orchard, blueberry farms, and cranberry bogs were very common. Voorhees experienced its growth in population during the automobile age when more and more people found the quiet country town as well as its appeal. Natural gas lines came to Voorhees in 1912 and electricity in 1920, and with them a large number of new residents.
As a small quiet town the residents of Voorhees enjoyed the best in life. Some interesting facts about the time when Voorhees got its start is that a pound of coffee would cost the residents just 20 cents, five pounds of sugar would total about 30 cents, and even in 1926 a typical ten day maternity stay in Cooper Hospital would come to a grand total of just $43! While groceries and hosptials stays are not nearly as cheap, Voorhees remains a great place to live!
