A Bit About Pennsauken

Pennsauken is a lovely township located in Camden County, New Jersey.  The Township was first recognized on February 18, 1892 and was created via segments of Stockton Township.  The Lenni Lanape tribe once occupied the area and they are thought to have given the area its name, though the exact origin is truly unknown.  Pennsauken means tobacco pouch in the language that is spoken by the Lenni Lanape people.  Though the land was once occupied solely by the Lenni Lanape people, today Pennsauken Township has 35,737 residents, according to the 2000 United States Census.

Pennsauken, New Jersey has a long history that can still be seen in the area today.  Historic homes, many of which are still in pristine condition, can still be seen in the area.  In addition to the historic homes that the area is known for, it is also known for the drive in movie theatre that was built in 1933.  The drive in movie theatre become known as the Camden Drive-in in Pennsauken and showed the movie “Two White Arms”.

Pennsauken Township is home to Petty’s Island, which is a 450 acre island that is located in the Delaware River.  Petty’s Island was originally an oil storage facility but today it is home to a cargo shipping operation as well as many nesting bald eagles.  Many in Pennsauken Township have big plans for redevelopment of Petty’s Island for the future.  Pennsauken Township borders many different boroughs and cities such as Camden, Collingswood, Merchantville, Cherry Hill, Plamvra, Maple Shade, as well as Cinnaminson, and is right across the river from Philadelphia, PA.
