A Bit About Oaklyn

Oaklyn is a borough that is located in Camden County, which is located in New Jersey.  The borough dates all the way back to March 13, 1905 when it was incorporated as a borough by the New Jersey legislature.  The area that is now known as Oaklyn had once been a part of Haddon Township.

Oaklyn covers just 0.7 of a mile and of that land over 11% is covered by water.  The area had once been very thick forest and was home to the Lenni Lanape Native Americans.  The Lenni Lanape lived on the land until 1681 when the Delaware River brought Quakers to the area.  The Quakers bought 250 acres of the land from the Lenni Lanape tribe and this land became known as the Newton Colony.  The dense forests were cleared and the land was readied for farming as the colony grew very quickly, with two highways being built to accommodate those that were coming to and from the area.  Those trails still exist today and are known as the Black Horse Pike and the White Horse Pike.  Eventually a racetrack was built, that attracted more people than ever.

Eventually all of the farms were divided into two different developments called Oakland and Beautiful, but in 1894 the name was changed to Oaklyn.  Today Oaklyn borders Audubon, Audubon Park, Collingswood, and Haddon Township.  The area still has a lot of historic homes and sights that are interesting to those that live in the area as well as those that are just passing through.
