A Bit About Lindenwold

With a population of more than 17,000, Lindenwold is a relatively large borough that is located in Camden County, New Jersey.  Lindenwold is a place that many call home, with more than 4,000 households in the area.  Lindenwold became a borough on April 23, 1929 when it was created with portions of Clementon Township.  Lindenwold was one of seven different municipalities that were formed at this time and with the formation of these areas Clementon Township was no more.  Some of the other areas that were formed were Hi-Nella Borough, Pine Hill Borough, Pine Valley Borough, as well as Somerdale Borough.

The first meeting of the Borough Council was held on May 31, 1929.  The meeting was held in the council chambers of the old Fire Hall.  Wilmer Bedford was the man who named Lindenwold.  He was the Secretary as well as the Attorney for the Penn Guarantee Trust Company.  While making his way to Lindenwold he read a book in which the name was mentioned.  Lindenwold means “linden woods” in German, which seemed like an ideal name.  Bedford made plans to have linden trees planted along the streets of the new town, but while he was away the council planted more affordable and easier attained trees.

The total land area of Lindenwold is just four miles and of that area .76% is compromised of water.  Many live in the area simply because it offers them the community atmosphere that they are looking for as well as allowing them to commute to many other nearby towns.  Some of the areas that border Lindenwold are Berlin Borough, Berlin Township, Clementon Borough, Gibbsboro, Gloucester Township, Laurel Springs, Pine Hill, Somerdale, Stratford, and Voorhees.
