A Bit About Haddon Township

The first Europeans who came to area settled around Newton Creek in 1681. The land was mostly used as farm land, with a small village constructed where Haddonfield is now. Newton Township became the name of the area that covered 5,286 miles; which later became the 10 municipalities of Audubon, Audubon Park, Camden, Collingswood, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Haddonfield, Haddon Township, Oaklyn, and Woodlynn.

In the mid 1860´s Newton Township began to unravel. Many historians believe that the division of Newton Township was cause by an act of the New Jersey Legislature which called for a single voting place within each township to reduce costs and the likelihood of fraud. Previously, votes were held across two days in different locations in the Township. The act forced many townships to form into smaller units.

In 1865, the eastern section of Newton Township split off and Haddon Township was formed. It was named after John Haddon whose large landholdings included much of what is known as Haddon Township today.
