A Bit About Clementon
The area now called Clementon Borough New Jersey can trace its roots back to the Leni Lenape Tribe which inhabited the area several hundred years ago. As for modern times the area was first settled by Adam Newman, who purchased 200 acres in 1735 and damned up both lakes in the area in order to run a saw mill and a grist mill in the area. The land stayed in the possession of Newman and his kin until 1800 when Samuel Clement purchased the mills and surrounding land and began to cultivate the area, opening up his mills for those in need of employment, and creating the start of a community which would slowly grow over the next two centuries.
In the 1870s, poet and writer Walt Whitman called the area home and wrote his famous ‘Leaves of Grass’ while staying in Clementon as the town continued to grow ever larger.
It wasn’t until 1925 though that Clementon Borough became recognized by the New Jersey State Legislature as a borough, after breaking off from Clementon Township.
In 1907, Theodore Gibbs founded the Clementon Amusement Park making Clementon the amusement hot spot in South Jersey. The amusement park is still popular today, and the Gibbs family still own their interests in the park and it’s forty acre lake.
Today, Clementon is part of New Jersey’s First Congressional District and is part of New Jersey’s 4th Legislative District. Clementon Borough is a small town with right around 7,000 people calling Clementon home. It has its on independent school district and is centrally located making Travel to D.C., Philadelphia, and even New Your City a breeze for those who wish to commute in order to get away from city life. So, if you are looking for that rural feel, and a good location, this is definately a place to take a peek at.
