A Bit About Bellmawr

Located in Camden County, Bellmawr is a borough located in New Jersey, with a recorded population of 11,262 according to the 2000 United States Census.  Bellmawr was first incorporated as a borough on March 23, 1926.  The area that is now known as Bellmawr was originally part of the no longer existent Centre Township.  A referendum that was held on April 21, 1926 ruled that the land could be taken from Centre Township and become known as Bellmawr.  Three other boroughs were created at the same time and those boroughs are Mount Ephraim, Runnemede, and Lawnside.

Many in Camden County are familiar with Bellmawr not because it was once a part of Centre Township, but because it is where the main post office for the area is located.  In fact, the post office is the largest in the state of New Jersey.  Americans may have heard of Bellmawr because this was one of the post offices that were closed because of possible anthrax contaminations in October 2001.  Luckily, the post office was closed for just a couple of days before it was reopened, as it tested negative for anthrax.

Bellmawr borders several other boroughs such as Barrington, Brooklawn, Gloucester City, Haddon Heights, Mount Ephraim, and Runnemede.  At the first census in 1930 the borough had just 1,123 residents but at the 2000 census the borough had a population of 11, 262, though the population had peaked in 1970 with a population of 15,618.
