A Bit About Willingboro
The city of Willingboro, New Jersey, was established in 1688 on November 6 originally as Constabulary of Wellingborrow. The name was given to the constabulary by one of the original settlers named Thomas Olive, who was the individual responsible for settlers calling the eventual Willingboro home. When the Constabulary of Wellingborrow was initiated it consisted of today´s Edgewater Park Township, Delanco Township, and Beverly. The township continued on and as the United States became established and later the state of New Jersey the name of this area was changed to and incorporated as the Willingborough Township. This took place on February 21, 1798, when the New Jersey Legislature passed an act allowing the citizens of the area to incorporate the township.
Because of this incorporation in 1798 the Willingborough Township is now considered one of the state of New Jersey´s oldest townships. The name has changed a lot and this has caused some confusion like it did in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is because a large residential development in the area was developed by William Levitt and Sons. So, a referendum changed the name to the Levittown Township. The problem was that Levittown; Pennsylvania was just a short distance away and this cause confusion. As a result the Levittown Township name only lasted four years because a new referendum was held and the name was changed back to Willingboro.
Another interesting fact about Willingboro is that Carl Lewis, America´s amazing track star, grew up in this New Jersey town.
