A Bit About Southampton
Southampton was originally called Coaxen Township when first incorporated by the New Jersey State Legislature as a township on March 10, 1845, but its history startes well before then. Located in Burlington county. The name Coaxen, comes from the Quakeson indian tribe which had inhabited the area before the first settlers came. It wasn’t long after the first settlers came to the area that the missionary David Brainard began to preach to the indians who later facilitated the purchase of the area that would become Southampton from the local tribe. Many of Brainard’s churches still stand to this day as historical landmarks.
The area grew from a modest start, to a thriving community with a railroad and several mills on the nearby Rancocas river. Today the town continues to have the same close-knight community feel which has followed it through the years from its earliest beginnings, and stands as one of the oldest communities in New Jersey.
Southampton has its own school system for children grades K-8 and filters into the nearby Seneca High School for grades 9-12. Also, the township is located in the Third Congressional District and is part of New Jersey’s 8th Legislative District, as far as voting is concerned. Like most of the rural Townships it allows for easy access to D.C., Philadelphia, and N.Y.C., and is a great place to look if seeking a spot to rest away from the chaos associated with a more urban area.
