A Bit About Riverton
Riverton, New Jersey is a wonderful town located next to the Delaware River, the body of water which separates New Jersey from Pennsylvania. Situated about 10 miles north of Philadelphia, Riverton got its start as a resort town instituted in 1851 by a group of wealthy individuals from the Philadelphia area. Those individuals responsible for the creation of Riverton included Robert Biddle, William Biddle, Caleb Clothier, James Clothier, Dillwyn Parrish, William Parrish, Rodman Wharton, Daniel L. Miller, Jr., Charles Cleveland and Chalkley Gillingham. These individuals wanted a place to spend the summertime with their families which was close enough to Philadelphia for ease of travel yet far enough away from the city atmosphere. Riverton was the perfect spot for these folks.
The land was purchased from Joseph Lippincott and development began on the 120 acres of newly acquired land. Certain aspects of Riverton included residential homes and a pier on the Delaware River. It is important to note that Riverton was the first planned residential subdivision in the United States. This made the area even more noteworthy. Samuel Sloan designed the village of Riverton and it was an instantaneous hit.
Once the initial planning was complete and the homes were constructed, it was not too long after that point that many amenities and businesses followed suit. As individuals who lived or vacationed in the Riverton area needed specific amenities at their fingertips, the town soon saw the creation of schools, libraries, stores, social clubs and other fine establishments. The Riverton community was one that had everything an individual could want in a town.
Today, Riverton continues to flourish as a fine residential community nestled by the Delaware River and in close proximity to all of the fine amenities of the big city.
