A Bit About Riverside

The history of Riverside, New Jersey is quite fascinating. The historical journey begins around 1851 when Samuel Bechtold founded the town, originally known as Progress, as mainly a resort town. Those who lived in the Philadelphia area were looking for a place to get away from it all and Riverside held this ideal for many individuals. Although founded in 1851, Riverside really didn´t begin to get going until some years later when more and more amenities and residences were built in the area.

As the town grew, more bridges and roads were constructed to accommodate the visitors and residents. Schools also were constructed, the first one being built in 1885 and the second one in 1894. In 1891, the first bridge which would accommodate a horse and buggy transportation method on its way to Delanco was constructed. Later in 1901, the bridge went under renovations to accommodate trolley service across the Rancocas River as well.

There were quite a few important businesses which laid their roots in Riverside. The first was the Philadelphia Watch Case Company, the largest watch case manufacturer in the world, and the second was the William F. Taubel´s Hosiery Mill, which was the largest manufacturer of women´s seamless hosiery in the United States.

Today, Riverside, New Jersey is home to many individuals who live and work in the area. Its country like feel is still evident although it may have all of the necessities one could ever desire from a town. Although it may have started as a resort town, there are so many reasons why one would not only want to visit Riverside but live there as well.
