A Bit About Pemberton
Located in beautiful Burlington County New Jersey, Pemberton Township is a township with a population of 28,691 reported at the United States 2000 Census. Though this is what we know of Pemberton Township today, it has a long and colorful history. Pemberton first became a township in 1846 by an act of the New Jersey legislature. At that time, the area known as Pemberton Township was once portions of New Hanover Township, Northampton Township, and Southampton Township. Twenty years later, in 1866, portions of Pemberton were taken to form Woodland Township, leaving the land that is now known as Pemberton Township.
In the late 1800s it would be the introduction of the railroad that would bring more people to the area of Pemberton Township. Before the railroad the area was generally unknown and the area was not all that stable economically. The building of the railroad house was an exciting time for the area, creating growth in and around the area. With the addition of the railroad the township was able to start shipping items like sand, charcoal, and other items. This brought more people and more money to the area, bolstering the economy and creating the environment that is Pemberton Township today.
In addition to bordering several areas, there are also several unincorporated areas within Pemberton Township. Some of the unincorporated areas are Browns Mills, Country Lake Estates, Pemberton Heights, as well as Presidential Lakes Estates. Today the townships that border the Pemberton Township area have all been influenced by the introduction of the railroad as well making this an area that is rich in history.
