A Bit About Palmyra
The town now known as Palymra was settled in the late 1600′s by Swedes. A farmhouse built in 1761 by third generation settlers remains as the oldest home in Palmyra. The area was used primarily for farming until 1834 when the Camden and Amboy Railroad was built. At that time, the railroad workers purchased land along the railroad and built their homes. The community was originally known as Texas until Isaiah Toy, a local land owner who felt the name undignified, wanted to establish a post office. In 1849, as stockholder in the Camden and Amboy Railroad, he was able to convice the railroad to change it’s name to Palmyra. The post office was established soon after, in 1851.
Palmyra was once part of Chester Township, one of the original townships in Burlington County. Palmyra was set off from Chester Township and became part of Cinnaminson Township in 1864. In 1894, Palmyra was set off from Cinnaminson, then in 1923 was incorporated as a Borough.
