Lumberton is a true pioneer settlement and started in the late 1600s. Originally the name was Lumbertown and was named for the abundant pine trees that were in the area and the amount of people the lumber naturally attracted with settlements being built all over the area. When you visited Lumberton or as it was known, Lumbertown, you would see boats and rafts carrying large amounts of lumber and cordwood from Rancocas Creek to Philadelphia and many other places. Because both a creek and the railroad were in the vicinity of Lumberton, it made it a great place to live and work and was destined to grow and get bigger and better over time.
Lumberton grew from another town, which was Eayrestown and was settled by Richard and Elizabeth Eayres. Eayrestown was really the first settlement in the area and attracted people from all over as it began to grow and have outstanding features such as a picnic grove complete with a carousel. Lumberton was incorporated on March 14, 1860 by an Act of the New Jersey Assembly. The town of Lumberton eventually became the center point of commerce and transportation and all types of boats were using the nearby Rancoaca Creek. First there were rafts, canoes, shankus, sloops, and barges, and eventually the people of Lumberton saw steamboats starting in 1855 with many steamboats actually being built in Lumberton. Lumberton has continued to grow while the surrounding towns that made Lumberton are little more than memories and scribbles in the history of New Jersey.
