A Bit About Florence
Florence Township is an area that is located in Burlington County, which is located in New Jersey. Florence first became a township in March of 1872 by an act of the New Jersey legislature. What is now Florence Township was once a portion of Mansfield Township. There is an unincorporated area within the township that is known as Roebling. With beginnings in the 1800s the area is known for its rich history.
In 1849 a group of New York financers created the Florence City company and together they purchased 600 acres of land. The land was laid out as city lots and the constitution of the area called for five thousand shares of stock, four thousand shared were used to pay for a tract of land in Mansfield Township, which was along the Delaware River. Today this tract is still a part of Florence Township. Later the association of financers would build the Florence Hotel, which was also on the bank of the Delaware and served to attract people to the area. Today the municipal boat launch is now located in this spot.
Front Street was considered the main residential street at the time and was intersected by Broad Street, which was the main commercial road in Florence for the time. The area held a lot of promise, but eventually fell into bankruptcy. However those that lived in the area continued to stay there and worked to bolster the economy and make Florence Township the beautiful place that it is today. Today Florence Township is bordered by Burlington Township, Springfield Township, Mansfield Township, and Bordentown Township.
