A Bit About Bordentown Township
The Township of Bordentown should not get confused with the actual city of Bordentown because they are distinctly different although they are beside each other. The Bordentown Township was created by an act of New Jersey´s legislature on January 31, 1882. Three men sat on the first Committee that was the governing body of Bordentown Township.
The first Township Committee meetings were held in a shed. This served as an acceptable meeting place during warm weather, however when the weather turned very cold the location was no longer feasible. It was during these times of cold weather that the committee met in private homes. This situation continued until 1903 when the Township finally was able to build its first Township Hall. The location of the first township hall was on Cemetery Lane.
By the 1960 census it was obvious the Bordentown Township was growing sufficiently to warrant five committee members as opposed to three. Also, the job of Township Administrator was created because the township needed someone to manage day to day activities and to serve the residents in a better way.
As far as current government is concerned the Township of Bordentown is part of the 30th legislative district of New Jersey. The Township is also part of the fourth congressional district. The Township of Bordentown is part of Burlington County, which is governed by a board of five freeholders who are chosen.
